Memory, Identity & Transmission

Long before it had a name in any European tongue, this garment moved through the Eastern Mediterranean as a living technology; passed from weaver to weaver, hand to hand. Arabic named it qamīṣ, and that name echoed through Latin, French, and English: each language borrowing the word the way each culture borrowed the form. Gratefully, and without always acknowledging the source.

When the great migrations came, they brought with them something no map could confiscate: the knowledge of how things are made. Tailors opened workshops in Rio. Weavers reestablished themselves in São Paulo. Seamstresses carried their scissors to Senegal and built new livelihoods from the same gestures their mothers had performed in villages that no longer exist.

The works in this zone are transmissions; objects that carry what has been learned, lost, recovered, and carried forward again.

The qamīs does not end here. It folds, and begins again.
