Why Fragments?

Every Fragmenta edition begins with a fragment.

Not as an isolated object, but as the starting point for a broader investigation into the systems, histories, and relationships that shape material culture.

A fragment invites a different way of looking. It asks us to move beyond the finished object and consider the knowledge embedded in its making: the hands that formed it, the materials from which it emerged, the industries that sustained it, and the cultural histories it carries.

Each exhibition is preceded by conversations, field visits, archival research, historical references, and collaborations with designers, makers, institutions, and communities across the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Archive gathers fragments of that ongoing process. It brings together material histories, field notes, essays, conversations, and bibliographic references that accompany each edition—not as a complete record, but as an evolving body of knowledge.

Knowledge, like craft, accumulates over time.
